Empirical evidence of the effect of European accounting differences on the stock market valuation of earnings and book value

2002

Recently, a new dimension has been added to research in accounting harmonization by studying the effects of accounting practices and regulations on share price and return movements. Although there is an agreement of mutual recognition in the European stock markets of financial statements adapted to the directives, the differences between the European countries are still great. The objective of this study is to investigate the value relevance of alternative accounting measures (earnings and book value) constructed under different accounting systems in Europe. The distribution of stock returns: international evidence

1994

Although financial theory rests heavily on the normality assumption, daily stock returns display significant departures from normality. Different researchers have proposed alternative distributions. In this paper, the distribution of stock returns is examined in six stock markets. The empirical distributions present common features and are best represented by Student's t-distribution, while several alternative distributions are rejected.

The Stock Market Reaction to the Enron-Andersen Affair in Spain

2006

2Universidad Jaume I de Castellon This paper investigates whether listed Spanish companies audited by Andersen have suffered any negative economic impact due to the scandal surrounding Andersen’s work in Enron Corporation. To that end, we have measured the economic consequences, if any, of Andersen’s loss of reputation by examining the reaction in terms of movements in the stock prices of its client companies using an event study methodology. We have analysed abnormal returns on the stock prices of all firms listed in the Spanish Interconnected Market around two event dates: the date of Andersen’s public admission that it had destroyed significant financial documents related to Enron Corp. …
